Health Care for the Homeless Facility Receives
USGBC Maryland's Award for New Construction

Baltimore, MD – The new Health Care for the Homeless headquarters and clinic building, has received the United States Green Building Council Maryland's Award for New Construction. The award was presented to representatives from the general contractor, architect and owner Health Care for the Homeless, Inc. at a ceremony in the new Athenaeum building at Goucher College.

The new $9.5 million, 56,000 sf building was built to achieve LEED for New Construction Gold certification. The building is a pilot project for the utilization of a green roof to satisfy Baltimore city's storm water management requirement. Located in a flood plain, HCH was not able to install a storm water management vault. The green roof allows storm water quality requirements to be met on-site. Sustainable construction practices included 85% of construction wastes being diverted from landfill, 37% recycled content and 27% regional materials extracted, processed and manufactured.

Diversion of waste from the landfill or incinerator disposal is a critical part of green building. With that in mind, the general contractor chose Diamond Waste Services, Inc. to handle roll-off dumpster service for removal and recycling of the project's construction waste. Diamond removed a total of 238 tons during the yearlong project - of that over 200 tons including drywall, wood, metal, concrete and cardboard was fully recycled.

All waste loads and recycling destinations were fully documented using Diamond's proprietary computer tracking system. Diamond was able to regularly review recycling progress and discuss results with the GC. This system of reporting and review allows for proactive corrections and adjustments to assure LEED compliance and optimal recycling results are met.

Diamond's track record of producing results for green building projects has shown the company effectively satisfying and exceeding USGBC Materials and Recycling Construction Waste Management Credit 2 which requires a diversion rate of 50% for 1 point or 75% for 2 points.

Health Care for the Homeless is an accredited facility providing medical care, mental health services, social work and case management, addiction treatment, dental care, HIV services, outreach, prison re-entry services, supportive housing, and access to education and employment for Maryland's homeless persons. The organizations mission is to end homelessness.

Diamond Waste Services, Inc. is proud to have been a part of this award-winning project and congratulates all project participants and Health Care for the Homeless, Inc. for their outstanding achievement.
